China overtakes Germany on the web

VeriSign has released a report that top-level domain (TLD) for China (.cn) surpassed that for Germany (.de) in the third quarter, making it the second largest base of total domain name registrations after .com.

The interesting footnote is on page 3 of the report:  “The .cn Registry (CNNIC) continued to offer an aggressive price promotion with a 1 RMB ($0.13) fee for a one-year .cn domain name registration.” Slashing prices to grab market share?
